As our summer reading program, Libraries Rock!, winds down, Quince Orchard Library would like to recognize a significant and long-standing contribution to our Friends of the Library - Quince Orchard Chapter from a company that produces real rocks, Aggregate Industries Travilah Quarry in Rockville, MD.
The property began operation in 1955 as the Hunting Hill Quarry. Over the years it has also been known as the Rockville Crushed Stone Quarry and Bardon Inc. Quarry, and is now called the Aggregate Industries Travilah Quarry. The quarry produces much of the aggregate used in construction for the National Capital Region.

Mining occurs about 11 months of the year. The mining operation shuts down for winter maintenance but hauling of stockpiled processed aggregate can continue through winter shutdown. In addition to mining stone and producing aggregate the quarry property also contains a ready-mix concrete plant and hot-mix asphalt plant.
Employees led guided bus tours down into the quarry, where guests learned about how blasting, crushing, screening, and processing methods lead to finished products that are used to build roads, provide drainage, and control erosion. A haul truck and loader were on display at the event so visitors could get a close up look at them and take photos.
“It was great to see everyone in the community come out and participate in Quarry Earth Day,” says US ACM CEO Guy Edwards in a press release. “The event was very well run by our local employees, and it provided an opportunity for us to make connections with the Rockville community and teach them about what happens at the quarry.”

During the event, donations were collected for the local community library organization, Friends of the Library Quince Orchard Chapter (FOLMC). More than $60,000 has been raised during Quarry Earth Day events over the years. In addition, with help from local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, 1,000 tree seedlings were given away to attendees.
On September 8, 2018, Richard Freedman, Regional Manager, Environment and Land Services of Aggregate Industries presented a check to James Stewart, Manager of the Quince Orchard Library and representatives of our Friends of the Library: Dawn Fairbanks (President), Nancy Speicher (board member), Jamie Pflasterer, (Treasurer) and Luanne Karr (Secretary).
